Abstract

1446379 Torque wrench TOHNICHI MFG CO Ltd 1 Aug 1974 [29 Aug 1973] 33917/74 Heading B3N A presettable torque wrench comprises a four-bar linkage of two members 11, 12 interconnected by links 13, 14, which is diagonally biased by adjustably pre-loaded biasing means, spring 15. Member 11 applies torque, e.g. via head 10, to a body, such as a nut, and the external force P is applied to member 12-as shown via grip tube 17 acting on rollers 19. Member 11 may have a stop 16 to limit relative movement. On application of force P, members 11, 12 tend to be urged together but are held apart by spring 15 until the torque acting on the body (nut) counteracts the pre-load on the spring and the members move. The links may be arranged so that one or both moves overcentre or a further link 18 interconnecting member 12 and tube 17 may also go overcentre. In one arrangement, Fig. 6, the links are disposed so that in the rest position cot α 2 = L(l cot α/L, which ensures that no matter where P is applied the wrench breaking point always occurs at the pre-set torque. Rollers 19 ensure that this also occurs when an oblique force P<SP>1</SP> is applied.
