Abstract
A signal S representing the frictional forces arising between the strand and the oscillated mould during a continuous casting operation is provided by selecting according to at least two frequency bands, e.g. 0.2 to 3 Hz and 3 to 10 Hz, the constituents of a signal, e.g. from a mould-movement sensor, representing the frictional forces. The signal S is preferably a signal representing the ratio of the demodulated constituents. Any abnormal behaviour of at least one of a plurality of continuous casting factors, particularly those related to the covering material on the liquid metal and its various functions, is detected by comparing the signal S with an analog- type reference signal considered as ideal for satisfactory casting. Casting factors such as tundish and mould conditions including metal temperature and level, pouring tube position, mould oscillation, cavity taper and cooling aid secondary cooling, withdrawal speed and roller pinch may be mentioned. The abnormal behaviour is corrected by modifying the factor concerned possibly automatically, at least in part, so that the signal S comes as close as possible to the reference signal. <IMAGE>
