Abstract

PURPOSE: To stop casting temporarily or to decelerate casting speed and to prevent the generatin of breakout by detecting the large-sized inclusions in the surface part of a solidified shell from the abrupt drop of the temp. in the prescribed position in mold walls.
CONSTITUTION: Thermocouples are buried in the position lower by ≥20mm and ≤700mm from the melt level in a mold, at ≥1mm and ≤30mm under the inside surface of the mold, and the temp. T is measured. When a large-sized inclusion is formed in the shell surface and contacts with the above-mentioned thermocouple point, the temp. T indicates an abrupt abnormal temp. drop P1. The decision of whether it is abnromal or not is accomplished by comparing the same with the temp. T and the reference values obtd. by deducting prescribed values kD1, kD4 from the time series smoothed values of the steady indicating temp. of the temp. T. When the readings of the T at every period of sampling are under the reference values by prescribed values, it is decided that the large- sized inclusin is detected, and the casting of cast steel is stopped temporarily and the drawing is performed after waiting for the formation of the shell.
