Abstract

PURPOSE: To detect a surface cracking flaw in casting and reflect the information thereof in the operation of a cpntinuous casting machine and its products, by disposing elements for detecting mold temperatures in the broadside parts of the molds, at predetermined intervals below the ordinary molten metal level position.
CONSTITUTION: Temp. detecting elements such as thermocouples are mounted to the mold copper plates, at the parts in the entire width or broadside parts of the continuous casting mold, in such a way that the measurement points are at predetermined depth from the mold inside surface. The intervals of these detecting elements are ≤70mm, and the longitudinal positions thereof are disposed 150mm below the ordinary molten metal level position. At this time, if the cooling water channels 9 of the plates 1 of the mold are provided by intersecting obliquely in a 5W90° range with respect to the drawing direction, the restrictions of the cooling water channels for the detecting element burying intervals are eliminated. The detection of the surface cracking flaws during casting, particularly longitudinal cracking is made possible by burying of this detecting element the occurrence of breakout.
