Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce longitudinal crack defects generated during production of continuously cast slabs effectively by adjusting the quantity of heat extraction in the mold walls in the central part at the width of a water cooled mold for continuous casting of slabs provided with cooling water slits like longitudinal grooves on the rear surface according to casting speeds. CONSTITUTION:In the operation using a copper plate mold, the cooling in the central part at 1/15-1/2 the entire width of the mold is inensified under the casting conditions under which the quantity of heat extraction in the central part at the width of the mold right under meniscus is insufficient as compared to that in both side parts, that is, when the casting speed is small. More specifically, the arrangement intervals of the cooling water slits in said range is increased or the depth of the slits is increased. If the casting is large, the arrangement intervals of the slits in the range of 1/15-1/2 the central part in the width direction of the mold is decreased or the depth of the slits is decreased. It is possible to reduce the incidence of longitudinal cracks by eliminating the nonuniform cooling in the width direction.
