Abstract

PURPOSE: To detect the abnormality of a solidified shell and to prevent the generation of breakout by comparing the time change rate ΔT/Δt obtained from the measured value of the temp. T in mold walls and the values of a prescribed range.
CONSTITUTION: In the inside walls of a mold, the internal temp. T is measured with the thermocouples buried at 20W700mm below the melt level and at 1W30mm under the surface of the inside wall. The abrupt rise P1 of the temp. T indicates the breakdown of a shell and the abrupt drop P2 indicates the presence of a large-sized inclusion. Hence, the breakdown of the shell is detected when ΔT/Δt exceeds the prescribed range in the direction of + and the large-sized inclusion in the surface part of the shell is detected when the ΔT/Δt exceeds the prescribed range in the direction of -. In either case, if the drawing is continued, the possibility of the generation of breakout is high and therefore the casting is immediately stopped temporarily or decelerated and the drawing is resumed after waiting for the formation of the shell.
