Abstract
In a relaxation oscillator having its frequency determined by the charge rate of a capacitor (C1), a switch means (12) is controlled through a field effect transistor (Q1) to discharge the capacitor at a predetermined charge level when channel current through the FET (Q1) is reduced as voltage across the capacitor approaches the voltage supply level (+ V). The charge rate of the capacitor (C1) is substantially unaffected by the FET (Q1) and substantially no power is drawn to control the switch means (12) while the capacitor is charging. A duty cycle output can also be accomplished from this oscillator without substantially affecting the low power attributes thereof. In effect, the level of charge on the capacitor (C1) is sensed indirectly from the difference between the voltage across it and the supply voltage (+ V) for the capacitor charging circuit (11), rather than directly from the voltage across the capacitor itself as in the prior art. The amplitude and frequency of the oscillations can thereby depend primarily on the supply voltage (+ V) rather than restrictively on the threshold voltage of the FET (Q1). <IMAGE>
