Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce the size and save electric power of a circuit part by operating the device as a series regulator when the output current is below a predetermined value and as a switching regulator when it is above the predetermined value. CONSTITUTION:When the output current at an output terminal 6 is small, a constant DC voltage is inputted to an error amplifier circuit 12 and the signal of the difference between said voltage and the voltage of the terminal 6 is outputted from the circuit 12, by the output whereof a control transistor Tr2 is so controlled as to be applied with negative feedback, whereby the voltage of the output terminal 6 is maintained constant. Here, if the output current in the output terminal 6 is large, an oscillator 9 oscillates, and generates a triangle wave in the output of an integrating circuit, the output whereof is superposed by the output of a reference voltage 11. This superposed voltage and the output of the terminal 6 are compared, thereby causing the Tr2 to make switching operation. Thereby, the device is operated as a series regulator or a switching regulator depending upon whether the output current is below or above the predetermined value.
