Float valves for controlling the supply of steam or air to water gas generators are actuated hydraulically so as to decrease the air or steam supply at first slowly and afterwards at a greater rate. The steam or air valve A is provided with a counterbalanced lever B having a series of holes C<2> by which it is adjustably connected by a link to a rod D guided by rollers E and adjustably connected to a float J. The float comprises a bell with a buoyant chamber and has a central screwed sleeve whereby it is connected to the rod and also to the spindle K of a secondary valve P working in an extension 0. The float works freely in a cylinder to which liquid is constantly supplied through an inlet L and discharged through a main valve controlled outlet M and auxiliary valve controlled outlet Q. When the steam supply is turned on the valve controlling the main outlet is closed either independently or through interconnection with the primary air or steam supply valves. As the outlet Q is smaller than the inlet L water rises in the cylinder raising the float and gradually closing the steam valve and at the same time lifting the secondary valve P to close the outlet Q. When the secondary outlet is closed the water rises at a greater rate and the steam valve is consequently closed more quickly.
