Variable-speed ratchet gearing comprises a variable-throw crank 18<1>, Fig. 6, driving through a ratchet clutch comprising balls 19, Fig. 4, which engage recesses 200 in a driving-member 4 and also recesses 21 in a driven member 5. The crank is operated to change its throw by turning an eccentric 10 by means of a sliding screw 8 of steep pitch. A rod connects the crank pin 18<1> to a pin 6 in the ratchet member 4 which is oscillated thereby. Two ratchet clutches 36, 37, Fig. 8, may be combined with gearing 40 so as to be double-acting in one direction. Or two alternatively acting ratchet clutches 27<1>, 28<1>, Fig. 7, may be combined to provide for reversed driving. The outer members 27, 28 of these clutches are in a member 5 which is slid axially so as to bring one clutch or the other into action. Two variable-speed gears of this kind may be used to drive the road wheels of a vehicle independently.
