Abstract

192,685. Babcock & Wilcox, Ltd., (Assignees of Deutsche Babcock-&-Wilcox Dampfkessel-Werke Akt.-Ges.). Feb. 3, 1922, [Convention date]. Hot-water storage apparatus.-In a steam boiler plant comprising a hot-water storage tank connected to the boiler water and steam spaces, the connection with the boiler steam space is controlled by the boiler water level. The upper part of a storage tank 3, Fig. 1, is connected with a boiler 1 by a pipe 10 opening inside the boiler at the normal water level. When the demand of the consumer 2 falls, the boiler level rises, and water flows through the connection 8 from the boiler to the tank. When the demand rises, the pressure in the tank falls, and steam is supplied to the consumer from the tank, through a pipe 6 fitted with a non-return valve 7. At the same time, to prevent water from flowing from the boiler through the pipe 8 into the tank, a valve 16 in the pipe is adapted to be closed by a spring 15 acting on a piston against the pressure in the pipe 6. In a modification, the pipe 8 is fitted with a cock 24, Figs. 2 and 3, so separated by a float in the boiler that when the water level rises, water may pass from the boiler into the tank, the fresh feed supply being maintained through a port 23, but if the level rises above a certain height, both the feed supply and the supply from the tank are cut off. If the water level falls, the cock is so operated by the float as to cut off the feed supply through the port 23 and allow hot water to flow from the tank into the boiler.
