Machine guns.-Relates to firing-mechanism for machine guns, of that type in which the hammer is prevented from striking the firing- pin until the breech-block has completely closed the breech. According to the invention, the hammer and sear are carried by the recoiling portion of the gun and are released by engagement with a surface on the fixed portion. Fig. 1 shows the breech-bolt 3, carrying the firing-pin 7, in its rear position. The hammer 1, pivoted at 2 to the recoiling frame 4, is held in the position shown against the action of a spring 6 by a spring-controlled catch 12, and by the engagement of an extension 9 of the hammer with a fixed surface 15<a>. When the breech-bolt has moved into the forward breech-closing position, the arm 14 on the catch 12 rides on the surface 15<a> and releases the hammer, which strikes the firing-pin 7 when the extension 9 of the hammer passes into a recess 10<Î>.
