Abstract

29.668. Dawson, Sir A. T., and Buckham, G. T. Dec. 21. Breech actions, sliding barrel and breechblock.-Relates to automatic guns of the long barrel-recoil type, and consists (1) in a special arrangement of the bolt return spring and of the firing-spring, and (2) in the means for releasing the breech-bolt retaining-pawl. The bolt-return spring B<1> forms also the spring of the retaining-pawl B<2>; and the firing-spring C<1> is utilized as the spring for the sear C<2>. The retaining-pawl B<2> has a downwardly-projecting arm b<3>, Fig. 17, which is engaged by a releasing-slide D; when the barrel reaches its forward position, a projection A<Î> on the breech-frame engages a projection D<2> at the front of the slide; the slide is thereby moved forwards sufficiently to turn the pawl B<2> and release the breech - bolt. The bolt - return spring is so arranged in conjunction with its guide-rod B<3>, a sleeve b<2Î>, and the releasing-slide, that these parts form a single unit removable from the gun intact. The spring surrounds the sleeve b<2Î> which, at the front, has a flange b<3ÎÎ> forming an abutment for the spring. The guide-rod has, at the front, a shoulder B<3Î> which is adapted to engage an internal flange b<ÎÎ> at the rear end of the sleeve when the bolt is in the forward position, as shown in Fig. 5. The trigger-mechanism may be similar to that described in Specification 29,658/10.
