1,924,159 AUTOMAT c Flame ACTION FOR GUNS William-F. Kellotat, Fortland, Oreg. I Assamese my 2 2, 1931. V serial No. 552,523
' V 9 plea... (01. 42-3) (Granted: under the Act of March 3, 1883, as 7 amended April 30, 1928; 370 0. G. 757) v The invention described herein may be'manufactured and used by orfor the Government for governmental purposes, Without the payment to me of any royalty thereon. v
This invention relates to an automatic firing action for guns. r I I The purpose of the invention is to provide a full automatic firing action particularly suited for light weapons,.such as the .22 calibre, in'which the breech block or slideis not locked in battery. The firing action, as designed, is adapted for incorporation in an existing gun by replacing and modifying .only a few elements of the semi-automatic firing mechanism of the gun.
The invention'is characterized bya sear actua-.
tor that is axially displaceable to operate the sear 1 and that is elevated by the breech block when out the of battery and depressed'by aimember on block as the block arrives in battery;
With the foregoing and other objects in view,
the invention resides inthe novel arrangement 1 Fig. 2--is-a fragmentary view similar to Fig. 1,.
and showing the breech block in fullrecoil with the trigger barin inoperative'position. v
Fig; 3' is a view similar to Fig. 2-and showing the trigger-bar in inoperative position. 7 1
Fig. 4 isa planview ofthe frame. 3 Fig. 5 is a bottom plan viewof the breech block. Fig. 6 is a detail view of the triggerbar.
Fig. 7 is a view in rear end elevation of the pistol. v r r The pistol represented in the drawing 'is'generally similarto that shown in'Patent No. 1,276,716 of August 27, 1918, as modifiedin Patent No.
1,277,379 of September 9,1918; Its principle parts comprise a main frame 5, barrel 6, breech-block 7' and butt piece 8. The frame carries the hammer 9, sear 10, for holding the hammer in cocked position, andfa .pivotally' mounted trigger bar 11 reciprocal to move the sear from engagement with the hammer when actuated by'a trigger 12.
' The frame (Fig. 7) is provided externally with longitudinalribs 13 and grooves 14 and the breech block has corresponding internal grooves 15 and ribs 16 by whichthe breech .block when placed on the frame'from the rear is vertically confined and horizontally guided. during reciprocation. The
block carries the firing pin 17 and is checked on recoil and returned to battery by a reaction spring l8 confined between" it and the butt piece.
'j Of the parts hereinbefore enumerated the only replacement in the weapon of the patents is the trigger bar 11 and in this member thepivot 19 for connecting it to the trigger remains unchanged. On the rear or free end of the trigger barfthere are a pair of laterally projecting lugs;
'(Fig. 6) the outside lug 20 whose bottom face constitutes a cam face 21 andthe inside lug 22 whose bottom face constitutes a cam surface 23; The inside 111g 22 is inserted through a recess2l (Figs. 3 and 4) in the upper marginiof the side plate of the frame so that it may be disposed Within theframe and available to the sear as will be more fully described hereinafter.
The shank of the trigger bar is disposed in a channel 25 formed inthe left side plate of the frame below the groove 14. The channel is progressively enlarged to the rear by tapering to permit elevation and depression of the trigger bar about its pivot from the normal assembled p'osig tionshown in Fig. 1. Referring to Figs. 2 and 5 the rib 16 of the breech block is interrupted intermediate 1 its length by a cut-out 26. The extremities of the forward portion of the divided rib are beveled, thefro'nt bevel 27 serving to engage the outside lug 20 of the trigger bar and depress the same when assembling the breech slide on to the frame and; the re'arbevel 28 serving to engage the lug 20 andf elevatethe trigger bar during initial retraction of the breech block from the in-battery position." The front bevel 27'is on the existing gun of the patent but it is apparent that the front bevel could be reversed and made to act similar to the rear bevel in elevating the trigger bar during assembly of the breech block on the Securedv to the forward bolt portion 29 of the breechblock is a rearwardly and downwardly inclined depressor finger 30 whose position laterally of the block is toward they left side so that it is capable of engaging the upper faceof the inside the. hammer cocked. The trigger bar 11 is to the rear, the inside lug 22 of the trigger bar isheld in engagement with the depressor finger 30 by the trigger spring 12a and the cam face 23 on thelug 22 is just out of contact with the beveled face 10a of the sear 10. When the trigger 12 is pulled to the rear the trigger bar 11 is moved forwardly and since the lug 22 is constrained against elevation by the depressor finger 30 it will engage the beveled face 10a of the sear and rotate the sear forwardly. This movement of the sear releases the hammer in the accustomed manner to fire the gun.
As the breech block commences its recoil movement the rear bevel 28 of the'rib 16 engages the outside lug 20 of the trigger bar and elevates the trigger bar as shown in'F-igs. 2 and 3. With the trigger released and the trigger bar in the rearward position (Fig. 2) the inside lug 22 will be depressed by the finger 30' as the breech block arrives in battery at termination ofthe counterrecoil stroke, The lug will thereupon assume the position relative to the sear as shown in Fig. 1.
In order to obtain full automatic action of the firing mechanism the trigger is held back and the trigger bar is maintained in the forward position shown in Fig. 3 during the recoil'and counterrecoil of thebreech block. The inside lug 22 is now directlyover the sear so that when it is depressed by the finger it will act on the sear and force it forward by virtue of the engagement of the beveled faces 23 and 10a; The sear thus releases the hammer to strike the firing pin 12. The trigger bar is elevated. by the rib 16 during the recoil stroke of the breech block so that the automatic'action will be continuous as long as the trigger is held back. 1 When the trigger is released the firing mechanism ceases to function.
'connection' between the block and frame, an
interruption insaid connection, a pivoted sear within the frame, 'a trigger bar reciprocally and pivotally mounted on they outside of the frame, a trigger-for reciprocating thetrigger bar, lateral? lyextending lugs on the rear end of thejtrigger bar disposed 'in the interruption of the sliding connection between the block and frame, the out side lug disposed'in the path of the block where-- by'it is elevated and held in the elevatedposition by the block when the block is out of battery, the inside lug normally disposed in rear of and above the sear, and a finger on the block engageable with the inside lug when the block is in battery and arriving inbattery to depress the lug.
while the improved.
the trigger bar, laterally extending lugs on the rear end of the trigger bar, one of the lugs disposed in rear of the sear, means on the block engageable with said lug to depress the trigger bar when the block is in battery and arriving in battery, and means on the block engageable with the other lug when the block is out of battery to elevate the trigger bar.
3. In a gun, a frame, a breech block reciprocally mounted on the frame, a pivoted sear carried by the frame, a trigger bar carried by the frame and having a sear-engaging portion, means for axially moving the trigger bar to release the sear, means on the block for pivotally elevating the sear-engaging portion of the trigger bar when the block is in movement, and means on the block for depressing the trigger bar into sear engaging position as the block arrives in battery.
