Abstract
723,090. Automatic firearms. MINISTER OF SUPPLY. Aug. 21, 1952 [Aug. 22, 1951], No. 19763/51. Class 92(2). An automatic firearm comprises a recoiling breech-block 14 which itself incorporates a spring-loaded sear 22 adapted to control the firing pin 16, the breechblock being fitted also with a catch 25 so arranged as to prevent the energy of the spring 7 of the gas piston 6 being applied to the breech-block locking means, such as levers 19, 20 during the axial travel of the breech-block. When the piston 6 of the gun shown is moved to the rear, either by hand or by the explosion gases, a lug 6b thereon first slides along a slot 14a in the breech-block, and at the same time by engaging an aperture 15a in a sleeve 15 drags the latter, and with it the pin 16, to the rear of the breech-block against the action of a spring 17. Subsequently a ramp 16c on the pin acts on the tails 19d, 20d, of the levers 19, 20, to move the levers from locking engagement with recesses in the breech casing. The breech-block and the parts 15, 16, thereafter recoil together. During run-out a projection 6c on the gas piston engages the catch 25 of the breech-block until the latter is depressed by a fixed ramp. The piston now has free forward movement relative to the breech-block, and when the latter reaches its foremost position a part 15b of the sleeve 15 opens out the locking levers. Up to this point the firing pin is held by shoulders 19b, 20b on these levers, but is freed when the levers move to the locked position. The firing pin is further controlled by the sear 22, itself controlled by a lever 23 actuated by the trigger. For single shot firing the sear is free to engage and arrest the firing pin, but for continuous fire it rides up the ramp portion of lever 23 out of engagement with the firing pin.
