one of which is clearly shown in Figure 8, which are'on the rear ends of forwardly extending longitudinally elongated driven bars 116 which are secured at their forward "ends 118 to the opposite sides of the pumps or actuating slide 30, on the forestock 28 of the rifle stock 12. Thus, longitudinal movement of the slide 30 results in longitudinal movement of the sleeve 106 and the remainder of the bolt assembly 18, in opposite directions. The

see Figure 7, so that the firing pin can move longitudinally and forwardly relativeto the tube'146 for firing a cartridge C. The bore of the tube 146 has intermediate its ends a partition wall 164 having a relatively small axial bore 145 therethrough in which slides a reduced diameter elongated pin portion 166 on the forward end of the firing pin 146, whose forward end strikes the primer of a cartridge C, as shown in Figure 3, when the hammer 72 is operated. Circumposed on the pin portion 166 and compressed between the firing pin 156 and the partition wall 164 is a helical compression spring 168 which urges the firing pin rearwardly away from engagement: with the cartridge C. j x

Circumposed on the sleeve 106 is a locking'sleeve 120 Sliding in'the bore 154 forwardly of the partition wall 164 is a cylinder lock 172 retained in place by means of a screw 174 engaged in a longitudinal groove 175 in the side of the cylinder and limiting reciprocable movements of the cylinder in the bore 154, see Figure 3. A helical compression spring 176 is circumposed on the firing pin portion 166 and is compressed between the partition wall 164 and the rear end of the cylinder 172. The cylinder 172 constitutes a component of ejection means for ejecting fired shells of cartridges C, as

The locking heads 126 have inner cam surfaces 128 which are engageable by the bevelled forward end .108 of the sleeve 106 for spreading the locking heads 126. 4
The ring portion 130 on the locking sleeve 120 is intersected by the slots 132. The ring portion 130 provides means for orientating the locking sleeve 120 with an outer carrier sleeve 134, as hereinafter described, and a transverse bore 136 extends through the ring portion 130 and the sleeve 120. The driven bars 114 extend through 'slots 132 of the sleeve 120. Circumposed onthe sleeve -in the barrel portion 34.
As clearly seen in Figure 3, the locking heads 126 reach laterally beyond the sleeve 134 and into the groove 1 44 and lock the bolt assembly 18 in its forward firing position behind a cartridge C contained in the cartridge chamber 36.
Engaged within the cam sleeve 106 is a firing pin tube 146 having on its forward end an external enlarged an v nular end portion 148 for engagement in the recess 42 of the barrel portion 34, against the shoulder 149 thereof. The forward end of the portion 148 has therein a cylindrical recess'150 forreceiving the rim of a cartridge C in the cartridge chamber 36. The firing pin tube 146.. has in its sidewall, near its rear end 151, a threaded hole 152 in which the inner end of the screw 142 is threaded, see Figure 7. Sliding in the bore 154 of the tube 146 is a firing pin 156 having a rear end 158 extending beyond the rear end 151 of the tube 146, see Figure 7, but disposed forwardly of the rear end 109 ofthe cam sleeve 106 when the bolt assembly is in its retracted position. The rear end 158 of the, firing pin 156 is exposed for engagement by the head 73 of the hammer 72, see Figure 3, when the bolt assembly 18 is locked in its for- 1 ward firing position. The firing pin 156 has in one side urged dog 180 for engaging the front side of the rim on the rear end of a shell casing of a cartridge C and swinging the shell casing laterally and out of the ejection slot 66 in the bolt housing 16, as the bolt assembly 18 is retracted, as seen in Figure 7, to react the position shown in Figure 6;
Forward movementofthe bolt assembly 18 produced by sliding of the sleeve 30 forwardly on the forestock 28 moves the entire bolt assembly forwardly toward the firing position shown in Figure 3. As the bolt assembly thus moves forwardly a cartridge C, projected from the magazine 69 by its spring 71 into the bolt housing portion 52 in front of the bolt assembly is urged forwardly into the cartridge chamber 36, as shown in Figure3. The annular ring portion 148 of the firing tube ,146 is then disposed in the annular recess 42,'and further forward movement of the. cam sleeve 186 causes "forward movement thereof relative to the firing pin and the firing pin tube 146. The sleeve 106 moves forwardly relative to the locking sleeve so that the cam end 108 engages the innner sides 128 of the locking heads 126 and spreads the heads 126 into the locking grove 44, soas to securely lock the bolt 18 against rearward displacement upon the firing of a cartridge C. With a cartridge C in the cartridge chamber 36, the cylinder 172 is rearwardly displaced, against thev resistance of the spring 176, and the dog is displaced to engage around the rim of the cartridge. Rearward movement of the bolt assembly after a cartridge ha been fired results in movement of the locking heads 126 inwardly of the outer periphery of the outer sleeve 134, the cam sleeve 106 having sufficient movement relative to the locking sleeve 120 by virtue of the elongated slot 110 in the sleeve 106. When the bolt assembly 18 reaches the retracted position shown in Figure 7, the shell of the cartridge C is pushed forwardly and laterally by forward movement of the cylinder 172 by the spring 176, and the dog 180 serving as a fulcrum, the cartridge shell is ejectedthrough the slot 66.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed as new-is as follows:
1. In a sliding firearm bolt action, a barrel having a rear end portion having therein a rearwardly opening cartridge chamber, a bolt housing at the rear end of the barrel having a bore aligned with said cartridge chamber, a stock on which the barrel and the bolt housing are mounted, a trigger assembly mounted on the stock rearwardly of the cartridge magazine, a cartridge magazine receiver on the stock forwardly of the trigger assembly and opening into the bolt housing bore, a slide mounted on the stock, a bolt assembly sliding in the bolt housing bore behind the barrel, said bolt assembly compirsing an outer sleeve sliding in said bore, said outer sleeve having a forwardly flaring bore portion, a locking sleeve engaged in said outer sleeve having longitudinal spring fingers having laterally projecting locking heads on their forward ends projecting laterally outwardly from the outer tube at the forward end thereof, said locking heads having internal cam surfaces, an operating and cam sleeve sliding in said locking sleeve and having a cam on its forward end operatively engageable with the locking head cam surface, means operatively connecting said operating sleeve to said slide, a firing pin tube sliding in said operating tube, an enlarged diameter ring portion on the forward end of said firing pin tube positioned forwardly of the forward end of the operating sleeve, said firing pin tube having a bore extending axially therethrough and said ring portion having an enlarged axial recess in its forward end for receiving the rim on the rear end of a cartridge positioned in said cartridge chamber, an internal partition wall in the bore of the firing tube and spaced from the ends of the firing tube, said partition wall having a reduced axial bore therethrough, a firing pin sliding in the firing pin tube rearwardly of the partition wall and having a reduced pin portion working in said reduced axial bore, spring means urging the firing pin rearwardly, said firing pin having a rear end and said trigger assembly having a hammer head arranged to be engaged with the rear end of the firing pin to project the reduced firing pin portion to strike and fire a cartridge in the cartridge chamber, a forwardly spring pressed cylinder slidably mounted on said reduced firing pin portion forwardly of said partition wall, means for limiting longitudinal movement of said cylinder along said reduced pin portion,
said cylinder having a forward cartridge engaging end,
means connecting the outer sleeve, the locking sleeve and the firing pin sleeve together against rotation and longitudinal movements relative to each other, and limiting longitudinal and rotational movements of the operating and cam sleeve relative to the operating sleeves and precluding longitudinal and rotational movement of the firing pin tube relative to the operating and cam sleeve, said rear end portion of the barrel having therein an annular recess opening in the bolt housing bore and accommodating said enlarged ring portion of the firing pin tube in the forward firing position of the bolt assembly, said recess having a shoulder at its forward end, the sidewall of said annular recess having therein an annular locking recess into which said locking heads are engageable when the operating and cam sleeve is moved forwardly relative to the locking sleeve, with the enlarged ring portion of the firing pin tube engaged with said shoulder, and the cam of the operating sleeve engages the cam surface of the locking heads and spreads the heads into said locking groove.
2. In a sliding firearm bolt action, a barrel having a rear end portion having therein a rearwardly opening cartridge chamber, a bolt housing at the rear end of the barrel having a bore aligned with said cartridge cham ber, a stock on which the barrel and the bolt housing are mounted, a trigger assembly mounted on the stock rearwardly of the cartridge magazine, a cartridge magazine receiver on the stock forwardly of the'trigger assembly and opening into the bolt housing bore, a slide mounted on the stock, a bolt assembly sliding in the bolt housing bore behind the barrel, said bolt assembly comprising an outer sleeve sliding in said bore, said outer sleeve having a forwardly flaring bore portion, a locking sleeve engaged in said outer sleeve having longitudinal spring fingers having laterally projecting locking heads on their forward ends projecting laterally outwardly from the outer tube at the forward end thereof, said locking heads having internal cam surfaces, an operating and cam sleeve sliding in said locking sleeve and having a cam on its forward end operatively engageable with the locking head cam surface, means operatively connecting said operating sleeve to said slide, a firing pin tube sliding in said operating tube, an enlarged diameter ring portion on the forward end of said firing pin tube positioned forwardly of the forward end of the operating sleeve, said firing pin tube having a bore extending axially therethrough and said ring portion having an enlarged axial recess in its forward end for receiving the rim on the rear end of a cartridge positioned in said cartridge chamber, an internal partition wall in the bore of the firing tube and spaced from the ends of the firing tube, said partition wall having a reduced axial bore therethrough, a firing pin sliding in the firing pin tube rearwardly of the partition wall and having a reduced pin portion working in said reduced axial bore, spring means urging the firing pin rearwardly, said firing pin having a rear end and said trigger assembly having a hammer head arranged to be engaged with the rear end of the firing pin to project the reduced firing pin portion to strike and fire a cartridge in the cartridge chamber, a forwardly spring pressed cylinder slidably mounted on said reduced firing pin portion forwardly of said partition wall, means for limiting longitudinal movement of said cylinder along said reduced pin portion, said cylinder having a forward cartridge engaging end, means connecting the outer sleeve, the locking sleeve and the firing pin sleeve together against rotation and longitudinal movements relative to each other, and limiting longitudinal and rotational movements of the operating and cam sleeve relative to the operating sleeves and precluding longitudinal and rotational movement of the firing pin tube relative to the operating and cam sleeve, said rear end portion of the barrel having therein an annular recess opening in the bolt housing bore and accommodating said enlarged ring portion of the firing pin tube in the forward firing position of the bolt assembly, said recess having a shoulder at its forward end, the sidewall of said annular recess having therein an annular locking recess into which said locking heads are engageable when the operating and cam sleeve is moved forwardly relative to the locking sleeve, with the enlarged ring portion of the firing pin tube engaged with said shoulder, and the cam of the operating sleeve engages the cam surface of the locking heads and spreads the heads into said locking groove, and a spring-urged cartridge rim engaging dog mounted on the enlarged ring portion on the firing pin tube so as to engage around the rim of a fired cartridge in the cartridge chamber, said dog operating in conjunction with forward spring urged movement of said cylinder against the rear end of the cartridge as the bolt assembly is moved toward retracted position by operation of said slide, to swing the cartridge laterally out of an ejection slot formed in a sidewall of said bolt housing.
