Abstract

143,268. Davison, G. C., and Caulkins, C. P. May 14. 1919, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Act]. Ordnance, muzzle-loading; breech mechanism.-Consists in providing a smooth-bore linethrowing gun with a concavity at the rear of the chamber to receive a firing-pin which is spring-retracted so as to protrude from the rear of the gun in position to be struck by a pivoted spring-controlled hammer provided with cocking and releasing means. The invention is described with reference to both muzzle-loading and breech-loading guns. Fig. 1 shows a muzzle-loading gun A adapted to receive line-throwing ammunition comprising a combined cartridge Y and projectile X, as described in Specification 143,267, [Class 9 (i), Ammunition &c.]. The rear a<0> of the chamber is concave to provide a space behind the cartridge to receive the front of the firing pin K, which is mounted within a removable block H, Fig. 1<a>, and is pressed rearwards by a spring I acting on a shoulder k. This shoulder acts as a valve engaging a seat h<1> to prevent the rearward escape of the gun gases. Firing is effected by a hammer M pivoted to the gun at a<2> and cocked against the action of a spring P by inserting the finger in a hole m<1>. The hammer is retained in cocked position by the engagement of its toe n<3> with a toe q on a sear lever Q pivoted to the gun at R and pressed against a stop U by a spring S. When tho lanyard T is pulled, the hammer is released and strikes the protruding rear end of the firing-pin K, which is moved forwards against the action of the spring I to strike the primer y of the cartridge Y.
