Abstract

6955. Whiting, W. J. March 19. Breech actions, sliding breech-block.-Relates to automatic pistols and other small-arms having a recoiling breech-sleeve carrying the breechblock, and consists in a special arrangement of the recoil spring and of the firing-pin and firing-spring. The recoil spring e and firing- spring i are arranged within the breech-sleeve a, and bear against the same rear abutment h, so that the firing-spring is compressed during the recoil of the sleeve and thus functions as a secondary recoil spring. The rear abutment h is slidingly mounted in the sleeve, and, when the parts are assembled, bears against a fixed shoulder a<4> of the frame; when the sleeve is removed from the frame, the abutment is kept in the sleeve by a rear cover-plate j; thus the sleeve, recoil-spring, firing-pin, firing-spring, and rear abutment can be removed from the frame as a single unit, shown in Fig. 4. In the construction shown, the firing-pin is adapted to serve as a spring ejector, since, from the fired position shown in Fig. 2, it is capable of a further forwardmovement until the lug g<4> touches a rearward projection d<8> of the breechblock d. The invention can be used in combination with the firing and safety mechanism described in Specification 6956/14.
