Abstract
19,354. Haeghen, G. V. Aug. 17. Safety appliances applicable generally; firing- appliances applicable generally; breech actions, sliding breech-block; breech actions, sliding barrel and breech-block. - Relates to guns in which the magazine can only be removed after the weapon has been rendered safe and consists in rendering the weapon safe without acting in any way upon the breech-bolt for the purpose of removing the cartridge from the barrel. Five modifications are described. (a) A combined trigger-safety and magazine catch consists of a half-round spindle 53, Figs. 1 and 2, which, when it is turned into the position to release the magazine, locks the trigger. At the end of the operating-lever 56 is a pin which springs into a recess in the frame when the magazine is removed, and is released when the magazine is replaced. (b) In the construction shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the magazine is locked by a sliding rod 60, which bears against a sear safety 62 in such a way that, when the safety 62 is put on, the rod 60 is moved by the spring 61 to release the magazine. A catch 65 holds the rod 60 in the position shown in Fig. 5 until the magazine is replaced. (c) In the form shown in Fig. 6, the hammer 66 is formed with a projection 67 which engages the magazine when the hammer is cocked. (d) Fig. 8 shows a pistol having a drop-down barrel. The magazine is locked by a catch 73 which is released when the barrel is unlocked. This release is effected by forming the locking-spindle 70 with two flat parts, the spring 74 of the catch registering with one flat at the same time as the second flat registers with the locking - notch on the barrel lump. (e) In the construction shown in Fig. 14, a lever 92 bearing against a part 94 of the firing-mechanism, is locked when the magazine latch 87 is disengaged, as shown in Fig. 14. A catch 90 retains the parts in the position shown in Fig. 14 until the magazine is replaced.
