Description

I. D. FEDERSEN.
FIREARM.
10N man DEC: r3, 1919.
APPLICA JOHN D. PEDERSEN, orjmoxson, wromrnie rlmmmrc.
Application' filed December 13, 1919; i Serial No. 344,678.
T o all who-m it may concern. V
Be it known that I, JOHN D. PEDERSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Jackson, in the county of Lincoln and State of lVyoming, have invented certa-in new and useful Improvements in Firearms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates more especially to that class of firearms which is usually designated as small arms, and a principal object of the invention is to furnish an improved grip-safety device particularly applicable to auto-loading and automatic pistols'. l
@ne class of small arms to which my present improvements are applicable, includes the auto-loading pistols having a grip-stock or handle-portion of the frame or receiver of the firearm, which is adapted to receive a safety device operable by hand4 grip or compression.
An improved auto-loading pistol of this kind is described in my Patent No. 1,348,733, dated August 3, 1920, and granted on my copending application (renewal) Serial No. 311,689, filed July 17, 1919. rlherefore, for convenience of illustration, l have herein shown my present improvements as ar-y ranged and applied to the particular kind of auto-loading pistol whichr is shown in the drawings of"said patent, to which reference may be had.
The features of my grip-safety device are that it is a grip, or handle-contained, safety device arranged to prevent discharge of the iirearm by locking the firing member or hammer and the trigger-sear, when my gripsafety device is in normal position or position of safety.
Also, where the rearm is provided with a sliding breechaction comprising a firingpin to prevent discharge of the tire-arm by locking the breechaction to prevent contact between the firing-pin and the.l cartridge, so that action of the ring member or hammer on the firing-pin will not explode the cartridge, this being accomplished by. a member which blocks a slidable member or controller in position to lock such sliding b'reechaction when my grip-safety device is' in normal postionor position of safety, said blocking member being actuated by a gripoperable member; the slidable member being releasable from position locking the breechaction by grip-compression of the vgrip-operable member which moves a member or block-lever, intermediate between the grip-operable member and said blocki member, Yinto contact with said blocking member and into' contact with a trigger member, so that subsequent movement of the intermediate member or block-lever by `pressure on` the trigger-member will release the blocking member from engagement with said slidable member or controller. v i
Another feature of my invention is that when' the slidable member or controller is, through engagement with a blocking member, in position locking the sliding breechaction of the firearm, .and my grip-safety device is in normal position or position of safety, the slidable member or controller is releasable from such locking position by grip-compression of a grip-operable member which moves a member or block-lever, intermediate between the grip-operable member and the member for locking the slidable member or controller, into contact with such blocking member and into contact with a trigger member which is also engageable with a sear member so that subsequent pressure on the trigger-member will release the blocking member from engagement with said slidable member or controller, and will move the Sear member to release the tiring member or hammer to discharge the firearm.
ln the accompanying drawings, which illustrate an embodiment of my grip-safety device, Figure 1, is a side elevation, partly broken away, of a pistol provided with my grip-safety device, the grip-operable member or grip-safety member thereof being in normal position or position of safety, the sliding breechaction of the pistol being locked, and the tiring member or hammer being in liring position.
Figure 2, is a fragmentary side view, on a larger scale than Fig. 1, of the rear portion of a ypistol provided with my gripsafety device, showing the details, the gripoperable member or grip-safety member thereof being "compressed, my device being in position preparatory to release of the member for locking the sliding breechaction of the pistol and the Sear member by trigger pressure, the firing member or hammer being in firing position.
Figure 3, is a fragmentary side View on substantially the same scale as Fig. 2, showing the details of the rear end of a pistol providedwith my grip-safety device, the grip-operable member or grip-safety member thereof-.being compressed, my ldevice bein in position wherein the member for locklng the sliding breechaction of the pistol and the sear member have been released by triggerpressure, the firing-member or hammer being in fired position.
Figu
of a pistol provided with my grip-safety device, the grip-operable member or grip'.-
safety member of my device being removed@- views. A M grip-safety device, generally denoted by G7, comprises a grip-operable member or grip-safety member G provided '.wlth a frame-rib. 10. The grip-safety member G5 e and frame-rib are `attached at the lower end thereof by a pivot-pm yg toy the grlstock of the pistol, the grip-stock of t e pistol being bored or otherwise eut away` lat 2, to receive the grip-safety member.' Gr'.'
The upper end G2 of thegrip-safety member G is engageable with the frame bf the pistol, they grip-safety member -G' being hand compressible or yieldable. The gripsafety member G closes the slot or space2, which slot or space is of use in assembling the details 4vof my invention.
The firing member or hammer H is pivotally secured to the frame ofthe pistolv and is movable to firing position and to fired' position. The liringmember or hammer rH is provided withV a firing-notch or cocknotch 8j and with an eccentric cam face 8k. A rod 11, is pivotally attached at its upper .end to the firing member or hammer H` and at its lower end is attached by passing through, or in other suitable manner, to la pivotal-pin 12, which passes through the frame-rib -10 of the grip-safety member G',
the rod 11, beingrintended to provide a stem for an actuating lor firing-spring 8 for the firing member or hammer H. A further purpose ofthe pivot pin 12 is hereinafter explained. The spring 8 surrounds the rod or stem 11, being seated o n said pivot pin 12,` and having a pivotal vmovement at its lower end due to movement of the pivotpin 12. and also being movable with the grip-safety member G', when this member v iscompressed, and abutting` a suitable face re 4, is a rear end sectional view, o n. the line 4 4 of Fig. 3, looking 1n the d1- rection ofthe arrow, showing, the detalls,
or-surface of the ivotal attachment of the rod or stem 11, to t e ring member or ham- When the'iring member or hammer is in l firing position, Fig. 2, a line drawn from the centre of pivotal attachment'of the rod or stem 11, to the firing member or hammer H through the center of the pivot pin'12, will pass Well to the rear of the center of the pivdt-pin :q which attaches the lower end of the grip-safety member G' to the grip-stock -of the pistol, the effect of this arrangement being-that the spring 8' resists hand compression of the grip-safetymember G', and returns-the upper end Gzthereof to engagement withthe frame when such compression is relieved. A line drawn from the center ofk pivotal attachment of the rod or stem` 11, to the firing member or hammer H through the lcenter of the pivot-pin 1,2, will pass through, or'slightlylforward of the center lof saidpivot-pin' g when the frin member^ or hammer H is lin' fired position, ig. 3, the eifectof this latter arrangement being that the spring 8 has a' tendency, to retain the grip-safety -member G' `in hand compressed or forward position, and thus neutralizes the reaction or sting of the spring I8 upon the grip-safety member G' upon'sudden arresting of the firing member orv hammer upon contact with the firing-pin of the pistol, when spring 8e.- The slidable vthe hammer H is actuated by the member or controller N is vmovable upwardly and downwardly, being guidedv at its upper end in its sliding movement by guide- faces 13 and 14 in the frame or receiver B ofthe pistol, and is guided at itslower end by a vertical rib or portion of the grip-stock which acts as a guidefa'ce,'and by a pin 15, mounted in the gripstock of the pistol, or by other means sultable for retaining the slidable member or controller in lposition for sliding movement -of the pistol in its movement.
The slidable member `or controller N is provided with a shoulder 14p having an upper engaging surface 14. vA recess or slot 16 is provided in the slidable member or controller N to 4receive the end of the trigger member F, and permit a slight movelment or play upward and downward of the trigger member Ftherein. u
The lower portion of the slidable member or controller N terminates in an extendved end'17, having on its forward side an inclined face 18`land having on its rear side a face 19, having an end-face or bottom side 20. f
The .slidable member or controller N is provided with a spring operated actuator 14m to move the slidable member or conthe firing member or hammer, and with an p arm S having a face 17t forengaging the upper surface 14e of the shoulder 141 of the slidable member of controller, and with a lever-face 17 c for engaging the end 22 of the lever-member n'. The lower end 17u of the sear member S is extended to engage the end of thetrigger member F. The blocklever 23, is attached to the pivot-pin 12 and supported thereby to move freely thereon, Fig. 1, and is movable inwardly by hand compression of the grip-safety member G', Fig. 2, so that the inner side or face of the upper end 24 thereof engages the extended end of the trigger member F and the inner side or face of the lower end 25 thereof engages the controller-blocking member 26.
The contreller-bloclring member 26, is pivotally attached at the lower end of the grip-safety member G, preferably by the pivot-pin g which secures the grip-safety member G to the grip-stock of the pistol: rlhe controller-bloching-member is provide-c Y at its upper end with an end-face 27, which face 34 being is engageable with the inclined face 18 of the slidable member or controller N, and is provided with adjacent step- faces 28 and 29, with which the end face or bottomside 2O of the slidable member or controller is engageable. An actuator 3() consisting of a spring 31, and a projector or nose-piece 32 is provided for forcing or pressing the controller-blocking member 26 upwardly, the point of the projeetor or nose-piece 32 engaging the upper surface of la rib 33, of the grip-stock ef the pistol, or engaging such ether means as will provide an abutment for the projector or nose-pieceto cause the spring 31 to force or press the controllerblocking member 26 upwardly. The trigger member F is provided at its inner end with an inclined face 34 and with an extended end 35, the purpose of the inclined to engage the extended end 17 d of the vSear member S after the extended end 35 of the trigger Vmember F has been brought into contact with the upperien'd 24 of the block-lever 23. The trigger member F is movable 'forwardly by means not shown, and by pull thereon is Imovable rearwardly. l
I n operation, when 'my grip-safety device n is in normal position or position of safety, and the firing member or hammer H is in firing or cocked position, Fig. 1, and locked in this position vby the Sear member S, and by Cooperation therewith of the lever member u and actuator 14', the slidable` memmember or controller N being in upward position, and blocked in this position by the controller-blocking member 26, andy gripsafety member G', the end 14"" of the slidable member or controller locks the sliding breechact'ion of the pistol against movement as described in my before mentioned atent.
The slidable'member or controller N-is moved to this upwardvposition by movement of the firing member or hammer H to ring 'or cocked position, the cam face 8k of the firing memberi'lor hammer engaging the face 17n of the sear member S to move the sear member, the lever-face 17 C of which engages the end 22 of the lever-member n, the face 21 of vwhich engages the actuator 14m, which moves the slidable memberr or controller N upwardly.
llhe end G2 of the grip-safety member G', Fig. 1, is in engagement with the frame. of, the pistol. The step-face 28, of the controllerblocking member 26 is in engagement with the end-face or bottom side 20 of the slidable member or controller N, the slid- 'able member or controller being held in this position by pressure of the end-face 27, of the controller-blocking member 26 on the inclined face 18 of the slidable member or controller N, whichthus holds the slidable member or controller against the pin 15.
rl`he'pin 15, thus acts as a detent means tcprevent 4inward movement orshifting of' the slidable member or controller N, but instead of a pin any ether suitable means for this purposemay `be used. The lower end 17d, of the sear member S is out of en! lie gagement with the inclined face 34 of the trigger member F, and the arm S19 of the sear member is out of engagement withl the upper surface 14e-of the shoulder 14D of the slidable member or controller N. The upper end 24 of the block-lever 23`is contactlll@ . able with the extended end 35 of the trigger member F while the lower end 25 ofthe *block-lever is contactable with the vertical edge of the step-face 29 of. the controller- 25 blocking member 26. f
Grip-compression of the grip-safety member G', Figs. 2 and 3, disengages the end G2 thereof from the frame of the pistol vand moves the block-lever 23 inwardly so 13@ that the ,lower end 25 thereofl is brought into contact with thev vertical edge of the step-face 29, of the controller-blocking member 26, Fig. 2, the slidable member or con! troller N still being blocked against downward movement by the controller-blocking member 26. APull upon the trigger member F first brings theiend 35 thereof into contact with the upper end 24 of the block-lever 23, and thereby moves the end 24: inwardly or rearwardly which forces the lower end 25 thereof outwardly or forwardly, which lower end 25, already vhaving been brought into Contact with the vertical edge of the stepface 29 of the controller-blocking member 26 by compression of the grip-safety member G', forces the controller-blocking member 26 outwardly or forwardly and thereby ,disengages the step-face 28 from the end-face or bottom side 20, of the slidable memberor controller N, and permits downward'mov-eyment of the slidable member or controller.
Pull upon the trigger member F next engages the inclined face 34 thereof, with the lower end 17d ofthe sear member S, and moves the sear member to'release the firing member or hammer H which is actuated by the spring 8". Y
Movement of the sear member S also engages, or brings into contact, by movement of the firing member or hammer H to fired position, the arms S10 thereof with the up-v per surface 14@ of the shoulder 14fP`of the slidable member or controller N, Fig. 3, thus moving the slidable memberorcontroller downwardly, and thereby releasing the sliding breechaction and permitting discharge of the pistol upon contact of the firing mem-4 ber or hammer H with the firing-pin of the sliding breechaction.
