` JOHN D. PEDERSEN, F JACKSON, WYOMING-.
Be it known that I, JOHN'D. Pnnnnsnis, a citizen of the United States, residui in Jackson, in the county of Lincoln and tate of W oming, have invented certain new and use the vfollowing is a specication. This invention relates more especially to that class Vof firearms which is usually designated as small arms,A andl a principal object of the-invention is to furnish an improved grip-safety device particularly applicable to' auto-loading and automatic pistols. y. One class of small arms to which my present vimprovements are applicable, includes the auto-loading istols having 'a grip-stock, or handle-portion of the frame or receiver of the irearm, which is adapted to receive a safety device operable by hand.- grp or compression.
n improved auto-loading istol of this kind is described in my patent o. 1,348,733,
dated August 3rd, 1920, and granted on my' 'co-pending (renewal) application Serial N o. 311,689, filed July 17, 1919. Therefore, for convenience of illustration, I have herein illustrated mypresent improvements as arranged and applied to the particular kind of auto-loading pistoll shown in the drawings of said patent, to which reference may be had.
The features of my. grip-safety device are that it is a grip or handle contained safety 'device arranged to prevent iiring of the firearm by locking the firing member or hammer and the trigger sear, ,when my gripsafety device is in normal or safet position. Also, where the firearm is provi ed with a sliding breech action comprising a liring pin, to prevent discharge of the firearm by locking the breech action to prevent contact between the firing-pin and the cartridge, so that action of the firing member or hammer on the firing-pin will not explode the cartridge. p'
Another feature of my grip-safety device is that it is provided with a slidable memberor controller,- whichpis movedin a direction, v-
upwardly as shown, into position to lock the. 'trigger sear and firing member or hammer and the sliding breech action, as the' case;- may be, by pressure 'of the main spring or y A i i linea-Q5 Fig. 3, looking in the direction of theariow, o t
ring spring when the firing member or hammer is `moved to firing position.
Another feature of -my grip-safety'device the slidable mem Improvements in Firearms, of which `the grip-operable is that. pull upon the trigger member, when the grip-operable or grip-safety member of my device is gri -compressed, rst releases er or controller for movement from its locking' position, and subsequently moves the sear member to release Patented Aug. 1e, 1921.'
the firing member or hammer for movementl from firing position to fired position. i111Ilisit the acconpnyingt drawings, which raeanemoimeno devipe, A my grip safety Figure 1, is a sideelev away to. show the details, of a pistol rovided with my grip-safety device and gaving a sliding breech action, the grip-opergble or grip-safety member of my device eing safety, the breech action being locked, and the firing member or hammer being locked in firing position.
Fig. 2, is a fra larger scale thanv to show the details, pistol provided with my gri -safety device, orgrip-sa ety member of my device being grip-compressed to move a blocking inem er preparatory to pullupon the trigger member to release the slidable member or controller for movement-to unlocking position, and preparatory to movement of the scar member to' release the lirin member or hammer for movement to re position.
Fig. 3, -is a fragmentary side-view, on substantially'the same scale as Fig. 2', and broken away to show the details, of a pistol provided with my grip-safety device, the
S mentary side view, on
grip-operable member being grip-compressed, the blocking member being moved by trigger pressure` to release the slidable` the'. arrow, of the rear portion Vof a pistol providedwith my grip-safety device, part fithe froiit\-side of the rear portion of the ,p' beingremoved ...,25., isa detail sectional view, lon the he rear portion of a-pistol in .normal position or position of ig. 1, and broken away of the rear portion of a tion, partly broken i provided with my grip-safety device, part of the rear side of the rear portion of the pistol being removed.
Similar reference characters or numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views. r
My grip-safety device comprises, with various other parts to be described, a firing member or hammer H, the grip-stock of the pistol being bored out or otherwise suitably cut away to receive the firing member or hammer and the various parts of my device.
The firing member or hammer is pivotally supported by the grip-Stock of the pistol and is provided with a firing-notch or cock-notch 8J and an eccentric cam face 8k, and is movable to firing position and to fired position.
The sear member S, is pivotally supported by the grip-stock of the pistol and is provided with a locking-shoulder 17b for engaging the firing-notch or cock-notch 8l, and with a face 17n for engaging the eccentric cam face 8k of the firing member or hammer H, and is provided with an arm S10 having a face 17f, and with a rear-face 17e and an end-face 17 d. y
The slidable member or controller N. is movable upwardly and downwardly, being guided at its upper end in its sliding movement by guide- faces 10 and 11 1n the frame or receiver B of the pistol, and is guided at its lower end by a vertical rib or portion of the grip-stock which acts as a guide-face, and by a pin 12, mounted in the grip-stock of the pistol, or by other means suitable for retaining the slidable member or controller in position for sliding movement and to prevent shifting thereof.
The pin 12 also acts as a detent means for the slidable member or controller as hereinafter more fully set forth.
The slidable member or controller N is provided at its upper end with a point or face 14a, which, when the slidable member or controller is in upward position, lies in the path of or blocks the sliding breech action of the pistol in its rearward movement. The blocking member or controller-blocking member 16, is pivotally supported on a bracket 17, mounted on the grip-operable or grip-safety member G, and is movable with the grip-operable or grip-safety member, and is provided at its upper end with an end-face 18 which is engageable with the bottom-face or bottom-side 14 of the slidable member or controller, and is provided with a recess 19. An end-face 20 at the lower end of the blocking member 16 is engageable with the 'grip-operable or gripsafety member G to prevent movement of the blocking member 16 out of engagement with the slidable member or controller N, when the slidable member or controller is in locking position and the grip-operable or grip-safety member is in position of safety.
From the foregoing description of my invention it will be seen, that if the firing member or hammer through breaking or wearing away of the cock-notch 8j of the firing member or hammer, or of the lockingshoulder 17b of the Sear member, should accidentally be moved to fired position while the slidable member or controller N is blocked in locking position by the blocking-member 16, the engagement of the eccentric cam face 8k of the firinv member or hammer with the face 17n of the sear member will so slow down or retard the actuation of the firing member or hammer to fired position as to prevent effective discharging contact between it and the firing-pin.
The lever-block 21, is pivotally attached to a bracket 22, mounted on the rip-operable or grip-safety member G. he leverblock 21 has an upper end 23 with which the inner end of the trigger-member F is engageable, and has a lower end 24, which engages the recess 19, of the blocking member 16, the end 24 being rounded or of such form as to be capable of moving or sliding slightly in the recess 19, the intention being that when the grip-operable or grip-safety member G is grip-compressed and the end of the trigger member F is brought into engagement with the upper end 23 of the leverblock to move the end 23 rearwardly, the lower end 24 will be moved forwardly and because of its engagement with the recess 19, will move the blocking member 16 forwardly so that the end-face 18 thereof is disengaged from the end-face or bottom-side 14c of the slidable lmember or controller N.
The grip-operable or grip-safety member G closes the space 2B in the grip-stock, and is provided at its lower end with a base 26 which is attached to the grip-stock by a pivot-pin g. The grip-operable or gripsafety member G is engageable at its upper end G with the frame or receiver of the pistol, and is releasable from such engagement by ip-compression, the grip-operable or grip-safety member being yieldable or hand compressible. The base 26 of the grip-.operable or grip-safety member G is provlded with a recess 27 which receives or upper end of the spring 8 surrounds the ,for the spring stem or spindle 29, which forms an abutment 8, the pressure of the spring 8 being u ward. 1
The roc er-lever 30, is pivotally attached vided with an upper rear end having a cupped recess 31, which receives or forms the seat for a rod 8bhereinafter described. The rocker-lever is provided witha lower front-end face 32, which enga es theter-l minal end-face 15 of the slida le member or controller N', to move the member N'upwardly into locking position when the endface 32is moved upwardly by movement or rocking of the rocker-lever.
The rod 8'J 'is pivotally attached at its lli-pper end to the firing member or hammer and. the lower end thereof is received or seated in the cupped recess 31 o f the rockeri rod 8 to the firing member or hammer H operable or grip-safety member G engages through the center of the lower end of -said rod in the cuppedl recess 31 of the rocker-A lever 30, will pass to the rear of the pivot pin g which attaches the grip-operable or grip-safety member G to the grip-stock, the e'ect of this arrangement being, through ressure of the spring 8, to retain the end of the member G in engagement with the frame of the istol or to retain the gripoperable or grip-safety member in position of safety, when the tfiring member or hammer H is in firing position. `When the firing/ member or hammer H is in fired osition this line will pass forward of the pivot pin g, the effect of this being that the spring 8 then has'a tendency to hold the grip-operable or grip-safety member G in forward or gripcompressed position and thus to neutralize the reaction or sting of the spring 8 on the member G upon sudden arresting of the firing member or hammer H when actuated by the spring 8.
A tension spring 33, carried kby the gripthe end-face '17d of the Sear mem er S to retain the Sear member S in position for engagement or contact therewith of the end of the tri ger-member F when the firing member or ammer H is 'n firing position, and to retain the locking s oulder 17b of the searmember in engagement with the cock-notch 81 when the firing member or hammer ls'm ring position. sprin contactorA 33 caA ried 'by the grip-opera le or grip-safet member G, engages the lever-block 21, to'
retain the lever-block Iin osition for engagement ofthe trigger mem er F therewith.
The trigger-member F is movable -forwardly by means .not shown and bypull thereon is movable rearwardly, and is received in the slot 13 of the slidable member or controller N. The trigger. member`F is' prov1ded`w1'th an end face 34 which is intended to engage orcontact with the upper to the ears 28 of the plunger 8c and 1s pro\`end23 of the lever-block 21, and is provided block to move the lever-block, and that the' i inclined face 35 will subsequently engage or contact with the' end-face 17d of the sear member to move the sear member. 'l
In operation, the firing .member or ham- -mer H being in firing posltion and the gripoperable or grip-safety member G in position of safety and the slidable member or controllerN being blocked in upward locking position by the blocking member 16, Fig. 1, grip-compression of the grip-operable or grip-safety member G `moves the blocking member 16 forwardly so that the blocking member 16 engages the slidable member or controller N as shown in Fig. 2, the slidable member or controller still being blocked in upward lockiig 1 position Pull on the trigger member rst engages or brings into contact -theend-face thereof with the upper end of the lever block 21, to move such upper end rearwardly, thereby moving the lower end of the lever-block forwardly to move the blocking member forwardly, and thus disengages the blocking member. from the slidable member, or controller N and permits movement of the slidable member or controller downwardly to unlocking position, Fig. 3. The pull onl the tri ger-member F subsequently engages the inc ined face 35 of the trigger member with the end-face 17 d of the sear member S, and moves the sear member to release the firing member or hammer H which is moved to fired position by the spring 8. As the firing member or hammer is moved from firing position to fired position the eccentric cam face 8 thereof engaging the face 17u of the sear member S moves the arm S10 ofthe sear member downwardly which, by engagement withthe upper Sur- -face of the shoulder 14p ofthe slidable member or controller N, moves the slidable mem-v 8 through movement of e firing member or firing spring or hammer H from fired 'position to firing or cocked position. Movement of the firing.
which moves the other end 32 of the rockerlever upwardlyz and the upper end 32 of they rocker-lever being in engagement with the terminal end-face 15 of the slidable member or controller N moves the slidable member or controller upwardly, or into position ,for locking the Sear member and firing member in firing position and locking the slldm breech action of the pistol agamst rearwar movement.
Release from trigger pull and grip-compression permits movement of the grip-operable or grip-safety member G to engagement with the frame, or to position of safety, and moves the blocking member 16 rearwardly until the end-face 18 thereof is yin engagement with the end-face or bottom-side 14 of the slidable member or controller N and blocks the slidable member or controller in locking position. l
