Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed October 18, 1910. Serial No. 587,729.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PAUL MAUSER, privy commercial councillor, a subject of the King of Wurttemberg, residing at- Oberndorf, in the Kingdom of .Wurttemberg, Germany,
have invented certain new and useful Im said specification the sear consists of a two armed bell crank lever pivoted at its center and furnished at one end with an upwardly projecting rigid arm, which forms the sear proper, while at the other end it acts in conjunction with an upwardly directed detent lever for holding and releasing the sear, which at its lower end is pivoted to the trigger, while its upper end engages with the sear lever. Now this invention relates to a further addition to or improvement of this mechanism by means of which it is rendered impossible that the pistol should be fired or the trigger actuated when the breech is not completely closed, that is to say, when the breech block is not in the proper position.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the new construction, -wherein Figure 1 shows the weapon with the breech in the proper position after firing, and Fig. 2 shows the weapon with the breech block in the partially open position and with the sear lever locked against being actuated.
The arrangement of the trigger mechanism is in its main features the same as in the above mentioned specification. The scar has the form of a two armed lever 11 a which is provided at its rear end with an upwardly directed projection .a which forms the sear proper, while its front end acts in conjunction with the detent lever c pivoted'to the trigger a.
The present improvement embodies a structure wherein the lever" arm a of the sear is provided with an upwardly extending projection a which, when the breech has been operated in the proper manner, engages with a corresponding recess 22 of I the breech block 1:.
By this means it is msured that the pulling of the trigger can only be effected when the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 1, that is to say, when the breech blockis moved as far as possible forward, or in other words, when the breech has been effectually closed. Should it happen that the breech block is not in this posltion, that is to say, should the recess 41 not be situated exactly over the projection a of the sear lever arm 0 the projection will stand opposite the full portion of the side o of the breech block with the result that, I

2. A firing mechanism for recoil operated fire arms, comprising a trlgger, a sear, a firing-pin, a recoll operated breech-bolt, and
cooperating means on said sear and on said upon said sear adapted to enter said recess in the breech-bolt only when the breech is in closed position, said sear being released by said trigger upon the trigger being pulled, whereby said projection may be disengaged from said recess in the breech-bolt to permit recoil of said breech-bolt.
4. A firing mechanism for recoil operated firearms, comprising a trigger, asear in the recess in the breech-bolt when'the breech is in closed position toprevent release of said firing-pin except when said breech-bolt is in position to close the breech, said sear being released by said trigger upon said trigger being pulled, whereby said projection may be disengaged from said recess in the breech-bolt to permit recoil of the breech-bolt.
5. A firing mechanism for recoil-operated fire-arms, comprising a trigger, a sear, a
catch-device upon said trigger adapted to engage said sear, means for disengaging said catch device from said sear, a firing pin, a recoil-operated breech-bolt, and cooperating means on said sear and on said breech-bolt for preventing operation of said sear to release the firing pin except when said breech-bolt is in position to close the breech.
