SMALL-ABM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 8, 1912.
j Application md February' 8,1911. serialno. 607,293.
To all whom it may concern: Y
Be it known "that I, PAUL MAUSER, royal privy commercialv councilor, al ysubject of the King Aof Wurttemberg, residing at. Oberndoi'fon-the-Neckar, in the Kingdom of ,Wurttemberg, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Connected with Small-Arms, of which the 'fpuowngs a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to an addition to or modification of the trigger-locking device protected by U. St. Patent No. 971,061, dated September 27,1910, in which. for'the purpose of preventing 'the plling ofzvthe trigger when the breech is unlocked, there is provided, wit-hin reach of the trigger device, a safety lever which is positively acted onqby one or both of the locking levers, and which, when these levers are in lthe unlockingposition, is maintainedby them in such position as to exerta locking action on the trigger parts.
Now, while in the construction described in the specication of above mentioned ptent the safety lever, likev the locking levers, is arranged as a one arm lever moving inward and outward, in theconstruction to which this application relates there is adapted'a much simpler arrangement which dispenses with the safety lever above referred j to, mdvinginward and outward with the lookin levers, and substitutes for it a safety lever l aving the form of a two armed rocking lever which moves vertically and the Afront arm of which engages with a locking lever, while its rear arm engages with the trigger catchl lever.4
The accompanying drawings illustrate the present improvement or addition .to the construction to which the 'abovementioned patent relates, as applied to a recoil loader with lixed barrel of the Mausersystem.
Figures 1 and 2 show the position of ythe parts' when thebreech is properlyr locked and vwhen the safety lever, and consequently also the trigger catch lever, are set free to permit of the pulling of the trigger. Figs, 3 and 4 illustrate the position of the safety lever in the locking position with the breech j lunlocked whereby the safety lever, whichv is in the locking or safety position, engages' the trigger catchlever and consequently pret ventsv its downward movement when the trigger is pulledg that is to say, it prevents the-discharge ci the wespen.` Fig,- 5 illuslever being shown partially in section.
c Referring to the general arrangement of the breech, the locking levers are, lin this case, arranged, as heretofore, as a pair of levers b, which support the breech-block from the rear, and vare pivotally mounted in the rear wall of the breech casing, and which, when turned inwardare in the locking position and turned outward are in the unlocking position, thelevers in the former position exerting a locking action on the breech block` and in the latter position permitting ofirs movement to the rear between the locking levers. Beneath the left locking lever there is pivotally mounted on the lever and the scar lever, the trigger catch central web or `llet g1 of the stock g the j two armed safety lever p, which latter is provided on lts fron-t larm p1 with an upwardly projecting nib powhich, when the locking lever?) is in the locking position, engages with a corresponding recess 5 therein. The rear arm p2 of the safety leverterminates in a projection or .catch p3, above which engages the hook shaped end a3 of the' trigger catch lever e2. This hook shaped end z3, however, not only engages above the projection or catch p3 of the arm p2 of the safety lever, but at the same time also over the hook s3 of the sear lever s? which is rotatably mountedin the usual manner on the pin s? from the lower projection of the lock q and which engages with the ringpin by means of the sear s.
` When the mechanism is properly locked, that is to say, when, as alreadyl stated, the
nib p0 of the safety lever engages with the recess boV ofthe locking lever b, the trigger can 'be drawn back without obstruction, as in consequence of the fact that the safety Vlever can perform its oscillatory movement,
the sear lever can be swung downward by the trigger catch lever and can consequently release the` ring pin. If, on'the contrary,
the locking has not been effected so that the'A locking lever is turned outward, the' nib pf will be unable to enter `the recess bo-,lwith the result that the safety lever 1b`e held fast in the position shown in FigL` 3 .and thatl the trigger cannot move thearm p2, together with the trigger catchlever .zz-downward -but'such arts 4will besoheld asto'be in-` capable o downward movement, the pulling 1110 of the-trigger and the consequent release'of the firing pin thus becoming Unpossible.V
arm el which is formed The trigger catch lever z2, ivhicnis pivotally attached to the trigb .a,`and'f'' is furnished toward its rearwitl lijdingc-atch y, is furnished .at its lower .1 'fd With a striking azfprolongation extending beyond the fulcrum. I
When, upon-the discharge ofthe Weapon, the release of the firing pin having been effected, the trigger is drawn farther toward the rear, the lower steppedend of the arm 21 comes in contact with a sto-p u1 provided at the upper side of the trigger guard u and thus brings about the disengagement of the hook z3 .from the hook s3 of the Sear lever s2, with the result. that even should the trigger not be released, the sear lever, being set free from the trigger catch lever, can return into the engaging position ready for the next shot. -By this means it is insured that the trigger mechanism will act properly at each shot so that when, after the shot, trigger has been drawn back, the firingv parts are caught independently of the trigger mechanism. T0 effect a fresh discharge it is suiiicient to release the trigger, when the catch lever Will at once assume its engaging position in relation both to the scar lever and to the safety lever.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
` l. In a breech-loading fire-arm, the combination With abreech bolt, of locking levers therefor, firing mechanism comprising a trigger, means engagedk by said trigger adapted to lock said trigger When said locking leve-rs lare in unlocking position, and means adaptedto disengage said trigger and locking means When said trigger is pulled to release the firing mechanism.
