Abstract

6875. Vickers, Ltd., and Buckham, G. T. May 7. Machine guns.-Relates to automatic guns in which the lock is operated by a crank and connecting-rod, and the striker is cocked during the rearward movement of the lock through the medium of a tumbler. According to the invention, in order to avoid recocking by the tumbler during the forward movement of the lock, the tumbler is actuated by a tripping-piece on the mechanism casing. Fig. 1 shows the application of the invention to the lock mechanism of a long-recoil automatic gun similar to that described in Specification 8783/14, the parts being shown with the barrel partly recoiled. In this position, a spring-controlled trip-piece C' on the hinged cover C of the mechanism casing has just moved an arm b on the tumbler B so as to cock the striker B<1> into engagement with the safety sear B<2>, but just out of engagement with the trigger sear B<3>. As long as the cover C is closed, movements of the crank A' during automatic and hand working do not affect the striker, even in the extreme position of the parts shown in dot and dash lines. When the lock is moved by hand with the cover opened, the striker is retracted sufficiently to engage the trigger sear B<3> by the action of the connecting-rod A<3> on the arm b<1> of the tumbler.
