Two-stroke-cycle engines. - In an engine in which a sleeve extension of the piston at the end of the down-stroke opens inlet and exhaust ports at opposite ends of the cylinder, the lead of the piston a, Fig. 2, slopes upwards from the distribution ports to the centre, and the cylinder head c may be similarly formed. The piston may be formed with an annular extension which draws in air around the exterior of the sleeve a' for cooling. The sleeve may be shaped as shown to allow for the gradual expansion of the scavenging-gases, and may be provided externally with cooling-ribs. The annular extension may act as a compressing-pump, and the engine may be double - acting. In the construction shown in Fig. 4, the sleeve a<1> forms a reciprocating cylinder working over a fixed piston c and compressing air or mixture in a pump b.
