Two-stroke-cycle engines; driving-gear.-In single and double acting engines which compress in the front ends of their cylinders, the pistons carry sleeves of a reduced diameter which slide over fixed heads either depending from the cylinder, in a single-acting engine, or attached to the framing, in a double-acting engine. In the double - acting engine shown in Fig. 5, pistons c carrying an extended sleeve b which works over a fixed piston a compress scavenging and charging air in the spaces q, which air is conveyed to the combustion chambers when ports r in the cylinders n coincide with ports k in the pistons. The exhaust gases are discharged through ports f which open into passages through slots x<1> in the sleeve b. Fuel is injected into the combustion chambers during the compression strokes when ports k, y coincide. Motion is conveyed to the crank shaft by a pair of outside rods connected to gudgeons on the sleeve b. In a modified construction of single-acting engine, the upper cylinder with its piston is dispensed with.
