Abstract

25,204. Wells, R. G., and Davidson, J. Nov. 13. Slide valves.-In reciprocating engines of the type having ports in the cylinder wall covered and uncovered by the piston, a longitudinallyadjustable ported liner b is employed so that the point of the stroke at which the piston passes the ports may be varied either by hand or automatically, as by a governor. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, as applied to an internal-combustion engine the liner b is adjusted by a fluid-operated piston f controlled by hand or by the governor. In a double-acting steam-engine, Fig. 2, the liner may be made in two parts i, k, having interengaging tongues l forming variable ports c, c', the parts i, k being adjustable by means of rods h, n actuated by pistons f, f' controlled by hand or by a governor or by a screw or other means. A ring m divides the exhaust belt d into two parts and also supports the tongues l. In a further modification, Fig. 5, the tongues l are separated from one another. The ends of the tongues may be bevelled, and the liner may slide into the cylinder ends as shown.
