Gas and like engines.-In an engine of the type in which an auxiliary piston works in the head of the cylinder, and is driven from a crank-shaft rotating at half the speed of the main shaft, a ported sleeve co-operates between the pistons and the cylinder wall with ports in the cylinder wall to control the admission, exhaust, and ignition. In the form shown, the main piston b is connected to the main shaft c, and the auxiliary piston b<1> to the auxiliary shaft c' from which the sleeve k is worked. The piston b<1> has a sleeve provided with ports h, h<1>, and the sleeve k has parts m, m', which register with the ports h, h<1> and -with ports n, n<1> in the cylinder a at appropriate times for the admission and exhaust. The igniter may be carried on the piston b<1> or may be uncovered at the right moment by the coincidence of the ports m, h. By suitably setting the cranks, any relative ratios of compression and expansion may be obtained.
