Abstract

Valves.-In a two-stroke-cycle engine of the kind described in Specification 119,401, in which the co-axial working and pump pistons are connected by a tubular extension acting as a valve. a tubular rod q is carried within the tubular extension c and acts as a valve to control the scavenging-air. The pump piston c compresses air on its upper side and mixture on its lower side, a piston-valve f controlling the distribution. The air is compressed into a. storage pipe i, and the mixture into a storage pipe k. The air pipe i communicates by branches t with casings p into which the tubular rods q extend. When the working piston b uncovers the exhaust ports a<1>, the scavenging-air is admitted through the rod q by radial ports r therein registering with cylinder ports s. Further descent of the piston causes ports o in the tubular extension e to register with the ports s and with a passage n communicating with the mixture pipe k, thus admitting the mix. ture. Fig. 3 shows a double-acting engine having a gas-compressing cylinder c on one side of the working cylinder a and a scavenging-cylinder y on the other side. Piston valves f, u control the gas and air, or automatic valves may be provided for the air cylinder. Or the cylinder may compress air on one side and gas on the other.
