Abstract
18,665. Marks, E. C. R., [Middleton, F. L.]. Aug. 18. Starting.-A multicylinder engine is started in either direction by compressed air admitted through one of two sets of valves operated by the same set of cams. Air is admitted to the passages a, a' for starting ahead or astern respectively, and passes to valves e normally held open by springs g but adapted to be closed by air pressure and opened by cams k ... o, Fig. 2. The cams are moved laterally by means operated by the movement of the engine and are of different widths, as shown, so that as the speed of the engine increases, the supply of air is cut off from the cylinders one by one or in groups. The air on the way to the cylinder may operate means for cutting - off the fuel supply. In one construction, the air moves a piston, of which the rod closes a valve in the fuel pipe.
