Abstract

Reversing; starting.-Compressed air for starting two-stroke-cycle engines in either direction is admitted through a fluid-actuated valve a, which is opened by the presure of compressed air on its piston face c. When starting the valve casing p is opened to a supply reservoir, not shown, and a hand-lever m, which also cuts out the fuel supply, is placed in one of its extreme positions to open the valves k, s or l, t the valves k orthus establishing-communication between the passages h or i and the pipe d through a passage x. By the opening of the valves s, t and the consequent reduction of the pressure in the chamber v, the valve q is caused to open the passage to the supply, reservoir. Compressed air from the passages h or i is conveyed to the valve piston c through a passage e, which is controlled by cam-actuated sliding valves f or g, the pressure behind which holds them in contact with the cams n, o. In a modification, the valve q is dispensed with. In both constructions, when reversing, the forward running of the engine is opposed by the admission of compressed air.
