Abstract
27,554. Hesselman, K. J. E. Jan. 5, [Convention date]. Starting; reversing. - In a fourstroke - cycle engine in which the functions of the inlet and exhaust v a l v e s can be interchanged f o r reversing, a supplementary exh a u s t port, uncovered at the end of the stroke, is provided, and the inlet ports may be put in communication with a supply of compressed air or the like, for starting in either direction. The engine has valves 3, 4 in connexion with pipes 5, 6, one of which communicates with a source of supply of working fluid through a valve 14 and the other with the atmosphere. The function of the pipes 5, 6 may be inter.- changed by means of a valve 18. A supplementary exhaust port 11 communicates with a pipe 12. Compressed gas is supplied to the inlet pipe through a pipe 16. The valve 18 is moved by a lever 19, to which is attached a link 20 for adjusting other parts of the reversing-gear. For normal working, the periods when the admission or exhaust valves are uncovered partly coincide with the periods when the port 11 is uncovered but for working with compressed air, the timing of the valves is so adjusted that a short period of expansion occurs between the closing of the admission valve and the uncovering of the port 11. For this purpose the fulcra of the valve levers are mounted eccentrically, so that they may be lifted. To prevent damage during the compression period when working with compressed air, a relief valve may be fitted, or the exhaust valve may be worked by hand. The engine may work on a two-stroke cycle at starting.
