Abstract

190,740. Welffens, E. J. June 29, 1921. Variable-speed and reversing gearing.-Epicyclic gearing comprising positive clutches preferably upon a planet shaft is adapted to yield one or more much reduced forward speeds and a reverse. A reversing-gear is shown in Fig. 2. A pulley D drives and carries planets 3, 3a, 3b on a common spindle 7. The gear 3 rolls on a permanently fixed sun gear A, and the other planet gears mesh with sun gears 2<a>, 2, which are loose on a driven shaft B and are driven slowly in opposite directions. A double clutch 5 on a feather on the shaft B makes connection alternatively with the gears 2, 2<a>. Fig. 4 shows a modification in which the clutch 5 slides on the planet spindle. In a further modification applied to spinning frames, internally-toothed dead and driven sun gears and interengaging planet gears are used with planetary clutches. A three-speed and reversing gear suitable for planing-machines is shown in Fig. 11. A driving-shaft D drives a wheel B, and four speeds may be obtained by means of two double planetary clutches 500, 500<a>, the internal gears 1, 1<a> both being dead. Specification 118,154, [Class 120 (ii), Spinning, twist. ing, &c.], is referred to.
