179,895. Schmick Gear & Screw Co., (Assignees of Schmick, H. J.). May 10, 1921, [Convention date]. Jacks. - In a screw jack a comparatively long internally - threaded member 12 is slidably but non-rotatably mounted in a casing 13 and is engaged by the threaded end 17 of a stem 18 which is rotated through bevel-gears by a handle applied to the shaft 21. The screw threads 16 on the inner surface of the member 12 are formed by casting and are mutilated to permit the flow of lubricant past the screw. A pawl 29 mounted in the gear 19 engages ratchet teeth on a plate 23 mounted on the stem 18 and in frictional. engagement with the top 24 of the casing. A ball 26 is placed between the hub 25 of the plate 23 and the top of the stem 18. The load is engaged either by the central part 33 of the top 24 or by a step 34. A removable load-engaging member 35, Fig. 1, may be provided. The detachable handle 22 can be folded.
