Abstract

477,067. Hand trucks. WILLIAMS, H. V. Dec. 17, 1936, No. 34647. [Class 108 (i)] An elevating truck is provided with an automatic retarding device which is in the form of a friction brake applied by axial thrust, the device being operative when the truck platform is descending under load and the retarding torque increasing with increasing load. As shown the load platform 7 is mounted so as to be drawn up inclined guides 6bymeans of the handle, a nut 14 rigidly secured to the platform riding on a screw 10 having multiple threads of quick pitch which is caused to rotate as the platform is elevated. The head of the screw is provided with a friction disc 16 adapted to coact with a fixed disc 15 on the head 4 of the underframe. On descending under load an end thrust is brought to bear on the screw the rotation of which is retarded by the friction discs. On ascending the end thrust tends to separate the friction discs.
