Lever load-handling appliances. - In ratchet pulling-jacks for withdrawing mine props &c., of the kind provided with means for maintaining the tension on the load chain during re-positioning of the sliding block, the end of the rack-bar b has a hook n for temporarily engaging the load chain g and a set of teeth r engaged by the spring pawl s mounted in the block a. The pitch of the teeth r is one-half, or other fractional part, of the pitch of the teeth engaged by the actuating-lever, so that, in the case of a heavy load, the apparatus may be worked by half-strokes of the handlever.
