Abstract

Jacks, - A jack for raising timber out of trenches &c. comprises a standard s, a lever a adjustably pivoted to the standard by means of a bolt k and, apertures p in the lever and standard, and a chain b<1> at one end of the lever the free end of which is engaged with the timber t by means of a loop t<1> or by pivoted dogs. By depressing the handle end of the lever the timber is raised and is then held in that position by means of a spring-retracted foot-lever d slidable in a slot in the standard and having a pointed end adapted to engage the timber so as to allow the loop of the chain to slip down ready for the next stroke.
