568,333. Testing hardness of the ground. CAMPBELL, SIR M. June 25, 1943, No. 10339. [Class 106 (ii)] A device for testing the hardness or firmness of the ground consists of a tube 10 from which a plunger 28, 32 is protruded by springs 50 to force a head 36 into the ground. In use, the device is set up vertically with a plate 12 secured to the tube 10 resting on the ground and is held in position by the operator standing on stirrups 16, 18 after these have been moved to the extended positions, Fig. 1. A projection of the plunger 32 extends through a slot 24 in the tube 10 and is attached to side members carrying handles 72, 74 by means of which the plunger is drawn to the top of the tube, the springs 50 thus being compressed. The plunger is maintained in this position by the engagement of a pawl 64 on the plunger with ratchet teeth on a bar 52 fixed to the tube 10. The plunger is released by turning a handle 43 secured to a rod 40 having a flattened part on which bears a pin 70, the pin thus being raised to move the pawl 64 from engagement with the ratchet teeth. The extent of penetration is shown by an index 63 carried by the plunger 32 and indicating against a scale 65 on the bar 52. Tools 94 and an oil can are carried in a tube forming part of the handle 48.
