Abstract

[Class 80 (iii)] [Also in Group XXX] To enable the supporting-table 13 or 13a of a lifting-jack of the pawl-and-rack operated type to be lowered suddenly, without injury to the teeth of the rack or to the pawls, the detent pawl is supported in such a manner, e.g. by a toggle, that when the support is withdrawn the detent pawl is urged freely out of engagement with the rack by its descent under load. The detent pawl 15 slides in a guide 20 and is held by a spring-pressed hook 21a in a recess 21 at the top of a link 22 the other end of which is carried in a recess in one arm 23 of a bellcrank lever 24. When it is desired to lower the table, the operating lever 18 is raised to enable a cross bar 36 to disengage the lifting pawl 14 from the rack 12. A tommy bar 27, Fig. 2, is then inserted in the arm 26 of the bellcrank lever which is U-shaped, and depressed to raise a slide 29 which normally bears against an abutment 34 on the lever 24; further movement of the bar 27 breaks the toggle-linkage 21 ... 25 supporting the pawl 15 which is then disengaged by descent of the rack. During normal operation of the jack the lever 18 prevents movement of the slide 29 and holds the link 22 against the guide 20 at 35. The lifting pawl 14 is supported as described in Specification 577,639, [Group XXX].
