Jacks.-The lifting pillar 6 is slidably mounted in a standard 5 and is provided with rack teeth 8 - - 11 which are engaged by a pawl 12 pivotally mounted on the end of the actuating lever 14. A pawl 18 pivoted on the lever 14 can be withdrawn from engagement with a rack 19 on the standard by means of a handle 21 and connecting link 20. The pawl 12 is first engaged with the tooth 8 and the handle 14 depressed as far as possible. If during this movement the crutch 25 does not come into engagement with the load, the handle 21 is gripped and the lever 14 is moved upwards until the pawl 12 engages one of the teeth 9 - - 11. During this operation the pillar is prevented from descending by the spring-pressed member 30. The lever 14 is then depressed and the load is raised. The pillar 6 is provided with a vertically adjustable crutch 25 and a load-engaging foot 7.
