Abstract

189,681. Long, W. T. Jan. 12,1922. Sliding-jaw wrenches; jaw faces. - Relates to wrenches of the type in which the shank of the fixed jaw is formed with teeth, and the, movable jaw sliding thereon is provided with a pivoted handle furnished with a pawl adapted to engage the teeth on the shank, and consists in so forming the rear of the movable jaw and the end of the pawl that extreme movement of the handle from the shank causes the pawl to be released from the teeth. Mounted to slide on the shank 1 of the fixed jaw 3 is the movable jaw 7 in circular recesses 8 in which are pivoted corresponding lugs 9 formed on a V-sectioned sheet metal handle 10. Within the handle is pivoted at 16 a spring- pressed toothed pawl 14 adapted to engage a graduated rack 18 on the shank. The rear end 13 of the, movable jaw is curved so that extreme outward movement of the handle causes the pawl to be raised out of the rack by engagement of the part 20 of the pawl therewith. The movable jaw is locked in position by securing the handle in the depressed condition by means of a ring 21 pivoted to the shank. The jaws are preferably arranged at angles of 120‹ to the shank.
