Abstract

173,150. Carter, W. R,. Dec. 1, 1920. Sliding-jaw wrenches. - An adjustable spanner of the sliding-jaw type is fitted with a spring-controlled member 5 pivoted to the sliding jaw 3 and carrying a rotatable worm 7 engaging a rack 4 on the shank of the fixed jaw. For rapid adjustment, the worm 7 is disengaged frcm the rack by pressing on a thumb-piece 8 on the member 5, a spring 9 being arranged in recesses in this thumb-piece and in the jaw 3. To prevent strain on the pivot pin 12, circular lugs 10 concentric to the pin are arranged in recesses in the sides of the jaw. A fine adjustment is obtained by rotating the worm 7 when it is brought into engagement with the rack 4 by the spring 9. According to the Provisional Specification, the worm 7 may be replaced by a pawl which engages a ratchet on the spanner handle.
