Sliding-jaw wrenches.-A wrench of the slipjaw type comprises a fixed jaw a, which is slotted to receive the shank f of a movable jaw e spring-pressed towards the jaw a, and a handle d pivoted at c between side-cheeks b extending from the jaw a. An eccentric surface l, provided on the handle d engages a recess in a loose block m having a roughened upper surface co-operating with a similar surface on the shank f, so that movement of the handle clamps the jaws e in adjusted position and provides a final grip. The spring for closing the jaws may be a spiral spring h, housed in a cylindrical slot in the shank f, retained in position by a plate slidable in a dove-tail slot in the jaw a and guided by a pin k screwed through the plate. In a modification, the upper surface of the block m and the undersurface of the shank f are arranged at an angle thus providing a wedging action to retain the jaws against unintentional movement when in the locked position.
