Abstract

Vices.-In a quick-adjustment bench vice in which the shank of the movable jaw can slide through the fixed jaw when tilted and is held by wedge-shaped locking members, the shank is pivoted about an adjustable bar having an inclined base, and the operating-screw for effecting fine adjustment is held in position by a collar located in the front of the movable jaw. The shank 4 carrying the movable jaw 21 can slide freely when tilted slightly, through an aperture 3 in the fixed jaw 1 and normally rests on a wedge-shaped fulcrum member 15, preferably of hardened material, arranged in an inclined recess in the bottom of the aperture and adjustable by a screw passing through the side wall of the aperture. The shank 4 has wedge-shaped grooves 5 with which engage wedge-shaped members 10 held by screws 13 in recesses in the walls of the aperture 3. The members 10 have clearance to permit of the free movement of the shank over the members 15 when tilted but act to lock it when released. Fine adjustment of the jaw is effected by a screw 7 engaging a threaded hole in the end of the shank and held to the jaw by a rib 18 on a segment collar 19 secured to a plate 20 which is fixed to the jaw. A set-screw 22 passing through the plate 20 into the shank limits the rearward movement of the jaw on the shank. The screw 7 can be lubricated through an oil-hole extending from the surface of the shank to the threaded hole. Specification 144,798 is referred to.
