748,830. Vices. FLOAT-LOCK CORPORATION. July 22, 1953 [Oct. 30, 1952], No. 20332/53. Class 61 In a vice adapted to be mounted on the work support of a machine tool, a pair of movable jaws are mounted on a shaft secured in spaced position parallel to the work support, one of the vice jaws has mounted therein a resiliently urged ratchet pin which engages spaced notches provided on the shaft, the pin being inclined at an obtuse angle to the axis of the shaft and away from the other jaw which is movable through a comparatively small distance along the shaft. The shaft 16 is secured to the work support by clamping members which are adjustable about a vertical axis and which allow rotatable and slidable adjustment of the shaft between the members when the latter are unclamped. The jaw 18 is mounted for limited slidable movement on the shaft 16 by means of a pin 36 mounted in a transverse bore in the jaw and engaging a slot 38 in the shaft, the jaw being adjustable by a nut 24 mounted on the screwed end of the shaft. The nut 24, bearing on a washer 30 which engages the jaw 18, is turned by a lever 26. The jaw 22 is mounted for rapid adjustment on the shaft 16 by means of a spring loaded pin 44 which is engaged selectively with one of the notches 42 provided at the bottom of a keyway in the shaft. On manual adjustment of the jaw 22 towards the jaw 18, the pin 44 slides into the next notch against the action of spring 45. To allow movement of the jaw in the opposite direction, the pin 44 is disengaged from the notches by means of the loop 46. The jaws have flat side surfaces for engagement with the work support and are provided with work supporting ledges. At least one jaw has a pipe gripping notch 50.
