Abstract

589,505. Vices. VOUCHER, Ltd., LAVENDER, F. H. R., and KENCH, E. R. March 21, 1945, No. 7075. [Class 6] (ii)] The jaws 29, 37 of a vice are mounted in T-slots 28, 38 in two sliding blocks 24, 36. The sliding block 24 is moved by a screw-andnut mechanism operated by a handle 23, and is provided with longitudinal slots 26 which accommodate two arms 33 extending parallel to the longitudinal sides 14 of the vice frame 10. The ends 34 of the arms 33 diverge and are disposed at an angle of 45 degrees to the sides 14 of the frame 10. An end plate 25 closes the ends of the slots adjacent the side where the screw 20 is situated. The arms 33 extend through slots 35 in the edges of the second block 36, which is provided with a pair of converging inclines 39, each of which is at an angle of 45 degrees to the sides 14 of the frame 10. Cylindrical rollers 40 are placed between each of these inclines and the end of one of the arms 33 associated with the sliding block 24. As the block 24 is moved, the block 36 also moves, but in the opposite direction, resulting in a self-centring vice. The block 36 is provided with a pin 41 extending through a shouldered hole 15 in the end of the frame. The projecting end of this pin is provided with a screw-thread and nut 42, and a spring 43 operates between this nut and the shoulder 16 in the hole 15 in the frame. This spring tends to move the block 36 towards the end of the frame. A cover-plate is mounted on top of the frame, with an opening for the gripping jaws 29, 37. A central hole is provided in the base of the frame to accommodate long work pieces.
