Abstract

939,912. Work-holders. TRANSFER TOOLS Ltd. Dec. 18, 1959 [Dec. 23, 1958], No. 41591/58. Class 83 (3). A work-clamping device comprises a toggle linkage 19, 20 extendable in length during clamping and a " Watt Straight line motion " linkage 11, 12, 13 operating a link 17 connected to the toggle. The device comprises two side flanges 2a supporting pivots 3, 4, 5 carrying the clamping jaw 22 and the links 12, 13. The links are attached to the plate 11 pivoted at 10 to a pneumatically-operated piston 7 and carrying the further link 17. The links 12, 13 are of equal length and hence the pivot 10 moves in a straight line. The link 17 is pivoted at its mid. point to the lever 20 of the toggle-linkage. The lever 20 is mounted on the fixed pivot 4 and is slotted at its other end to receive a pin 24 on the lever 19 which has a cam surface 25 thereon engaging a compensating arm 27 having a cam surface 29. The arm 27 is engaged frictionally or by a spring, with the link 12 and carries a pin 28 engaging that link. The final clamping pressure is achieved when the cam surfaces 29, 25 have extended the toggle and the link 17 has moved the toggle link 20 against a stop 31. The link 19 may be adjustable in length to accommodate different workpieces. The plate 11 may have three holes to take the pivot 16 of the link 17 for adjusting the final movement of the toggle. In a further modification, the arm 27 may be replaced by a toggle arm.
