Abstract

645,646. Vices or clamps. VILLIERS ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., and MERCADO, M. Sept. 25, 1948, No. 25058. [Class 61(ii)] A hydraulic or hand-operated clamp for holding work comprises two or more jaws 4 each guided in a vertical slot in the base 1 and pivoted at 6 to the inwardly directed arm of an L-shaped lever 5 which bears upwardly and is slidable on a pin 16 bridging the slot, the jaws being rocked inwardly and drawn downwardly into the slots to clamp the work by a vertically movable cam 11 which engages the other ends of the levers. The pivot pins 6 and pins 9 on the jaws are guided in substantially vertical grooves 8, having upwardly and outwardly inclined extensions, in the side walls of the slots. The cam 11, having end faces outwardly sloped at 30 degrees to the vertical which engage rollers or upwardly and inwardly curved surfaces on the levers 5, is pivoted at 12 to the rod 13 of a piston working in a cylinder in an indexing table on which the clamp is mounted. When three or more jaws are provided the cam comprises a disc with' a chamfered edge universally jointed to the piston rod 13. The clamp may be used in positions wherein its axis is not vertical by providing springs to control the cam operated levers.
