Abstract

637,632. Vices. SPINNLER, V. April 6, 1948, No. 9588. [Class 61 (ii)] In a vice having a movable jaw 2 mounted on a guide bar 14 slidable in a guide 13 in the fixed jaw 1, and in which tightening of the jaws by a cam lever 30 tilts the bar 14 to lock it in position, two pairs of hardened adjusting screws 17, 19 having locknuts 18, 20 are arranged in the guide 13 to take up the reaction pressure of the bar. Each screw is recessed as at 17a, Fig. 5, on the end facing the guide bar, to form an annular pressure surface 17b. The bar 14 comprises two flat iron bars on which the screws bear, joined together by bridge pieces 15, a spring blade 24 being attached to one of the bridge pieces to urge the jaw 2 against the cam 26. An abutment rib 21 in the guide 13 prevents shaking of the guide bar. The vice is secured to a work bench 9 by a pivot 4 passing through a circular foot plate 3 on the fixed jaw, the pivot having a square collar 6 thereon which engages in a square hole in the plate when the assembly is clamped by a nut 11.
