Abstract

629,938. Vices. CENTRAL TOOL & EQUIPMENT CO., Ltd., and SAMUEL, W. D. Dec. 24, 1947, No. 34226. [Class 61(ii)] In a power-operated vice, the power operates directly to move the movable jaw up to the work and a multiplying linkage then comes into operation to apply workholding pressure to the jaw. The piston of a pneumatic cylinder 20 is connected to a bar 21 to which are pivoted two links 22. The outer end of each link is pivoted to one arm of a bell-crank lever 24, the other arm of which is pivoted to a link 27 connected to the movable jaw 15. The bell-crank levers are pivoted on a slide 25 which is held up to the movable jaw by springs and which carries pawls cooperating with racks on the base 11 of the vice. When pressure is applied to the piston, the lever system, slide and movable jaw are moved together until the latter engages the work. The lever system then tends to move the slide rearwardly until the latter is locked by the pawls engaging the racks, after which it acts as a fulcrum for the lever system which then applies increased pressure to the movable jaw to grip the work. When pressure is released and the piston is returned by a spring, the pawls are unlocked automatically.
